Pipistrel with New Challenge Ahead

26.7.2010

Pipistrel, the Ajdovščina-based maker of ultra-light planes, is set to expand into new lines of business. For a start, it will venture into building bobsleighs.

The boss and owner of the company, Ivo Boscarol, says the reason behind this bold decision is the high price of the product and the knowhow which enables his team of innovators to build a bobsled faster than the existing ones have been.

Pipistrel hit upon the idea at the presentation of the Slovenian women's bobsled team in Vizionarna, the Ajdovscina research and cultural centre. "Our development engineers closely inspected the bobsleigh, coming up with a host of interesting ideas for improvement," Boscarol said.

"Our development institute employs more than 20 doctors and masters of science and junior researchers who would take up any challenge," Boscarol explained. The businessman would like to disperse risk and does not want to depend on aviation business alone in the future. The company has recently launched new development projects, such as the application of solar cells on uneven surface and a hybrid drive system for planes and other vehicles.

"We have also made a bicycle on which a Slovenian racer will attempt to break the world speed record." Boscarol says that bobsleigh has much in common with planes, mainly in that it must be fast, with the minimum possible aerodynamic drag and friction.
